Ethology of Hygienic Behaviour in the Honey Bee Apis mellifera L[ "Hymenoptera] Apidae#] Behavioural Repertoire of Hygienic Bees

چکیده
Hygienic behaviour performed by middle!aged worker bees is an important intranidal task in colonies of the honey bee Apis mellifera "L[#[ It comprises detecting diseased brood in the larval and pupal stages and removing all such infected brood\ thereby decreasing the incidence of infection[ Hygienic behaviour consists of two task!components] uncapping cells and removing the cell contents[ The aim of this study was to observe bees performing hygienic behaviour to determine their age at performance of the behaviour and to describe their behav! ioural repertoire[ The bees performing hygienic behaviour were middle!aged bees\ younger than foragers[ In the colonies where the behaviours of individual bees were observed\ all bees performing the hygienic behaviour were seen to exhibit both the components\ though at di}erent frequencies[ One behavioural class per! formed the task of uncapping cells at higher frequencies than the task of removing cell contents\ while another class performed both tasks to the same extent[ While these two classes had higher frequencies of the tasks comprising the hygienic behaviour but lower frequencies of other common behaviours in their repertoire\ a third class of bees included those that performed all behaviours in their repertoire at similar frequencies[ There was no di}erence in the ages of the bees in these three behavioural classes[ These results suggest that there is no evidence of task partitioning among bees performing the hygienic behaviour[ The segregation observed could\ however\ be based on their response thresholds to the stimulus and:or on their ability to discriminate the various cues emanating from the dead brood[ Corresponding author] H[ S[ Arathi\ Department of Entomology\ 108 Hod! son Hall 0879 Folwell Ave\ University of Minnesota\ St[ Paul\ MN 44097\ USA[ E!mail] arathiÝtc[umn[edu

APICULTURE AND SOCIAL INSECTS Varroa destructor Infestation in Untreated Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Colonies Selected for Hygienic Behavior
Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies bred for hygienic behavior were tested in a large Þeld trial to determine if they were able to resist the parasitic mite Varroa destructor better than unselected colonies of “Starline” stock. Colonies bred for hygienic behavior are able to detect, uncap, and remove experimentally infested brood from the nest, although the extent to which the behavior actua...

متن کاملHygienic Behavior of Cape and European Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) toward Aethina tumida (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) Eggs Oviposited in Sealed Bee Brood
In this study, we tested for the presence and efÞcacy of hygienic behavior by Cape honey bees in South Africa and European honey bees, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae), of mixed origin in the United States toward Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) eggs oviposited in sealed bee brood. We looked for colony differences in removal rates of brood in cells with cappings perforated...
متن کاملAssessing hygienic behavior of Apis mellifera unicolor (Hymenoptera: Apidae), the endemic honey bee from Madagascar.
Hygienic behavior (HB) is one of the natural mechanisms of honey bee for limiting the spread of brood diseases and Varroa destructor parasitic mite. Objective of our study was to measure HB of Apis mellifera unicolor colonies (N = 403) from three geographic regions (one infested and two free of V. destructor) in Madagascar. The pin-killing method was used for evaluation of the HB. Responses wer...
متن کاملECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND BIONOMICS Uncapping Activity of Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) towards Worker Brood Cells Infested with the Mite Varroa destructor Anderson & Treuman (Mesostigmata: Varroidae)
Varroosis, a disease caused by the mite Varroa destructor Anderson and Treuman has killed hundreds of thousands of Apis mellifera L. colonies in various parts of the world. Nevertheless, the damage caused by this mite varies with the type of bee and climate conditions. Varroa causes little damage to Africanized bee colonies in Brazil, as the infestation rates are relatively stable and low. We e...
